This week we sat down with Ruthie Kaminskas and asked her some questions for our Friday Agent Spotlight. Ruthie is an expert in Lanikai and Kailua real estate on Oahu, which just so happens to be her own neighborhood! She and her family embody the quintessential Kailua resident – active on land and sea! Ruthie has been all over the world and continues exploring with her family in tow, but she still thinks Lanikai is the best place to call home.
Tell us a little about yourself: I spent my earliest years in Washington D.C, my birthplace, and upstate NY. We then moved to Austin, Texas where I spent my formative years playing tennis, enjoying the lakes, and spending my summers in Colombia, South America. Both my parents are from Bogota, Colombia and I have a deep love for the culture, language, and beauty that Colombia offers. I went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and then ventured off to study film and language in Rome, Italy. I lived in Europe for 5 years which gave me the opportunity to travel all over Europe, North Africa, and East Africa. During this time adventure was on my agenda from climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, to travel down the Amazon River by myself. I've always been known to push the envelope a bit and take challenges. I came to Hawaii to work on a documentary film and absolutely fell in love with everything about it. I landed in Lanikai and never wanted to leave. Fast forward to the present, I am married to a fabulous man and have three awesome kids.
What do you like best about living in Oahu? I would have to say there is something very surreal about living in a place that has so much beauty. Our family is outdoors every day. I love starting my day with a gorgeous walk/swim on the beach or a breathtaking hike. My husband is an avid waterman who starts his day with a water sport and my kids hold the same appreciation we do. Oahu provides a healthy way of living.
What's your favorite activity outside of work? I know it sounds cliche, but my favorite activity outside of work is being with my family. Our children are growing faster than we would have ever expected. My oldest is a Sophomore and college is right around the corner. If I'm not working, you will find me with one or all of my family members. My absolute favorite thing to do is travel with them. It gets us away from all of our individual schedules and provides quality family and downtime. We are definitely a family that works hard and plays hard.
What do you like most about working at Elite Pacific Properties? I love the RESOURCES and the LEADERSHIP that Elite provides for me and all of their agents. Elite has created a Luxury Boutique Brokerage that has an unsurpassable formula for helping you to succeed.
Do you have a favorite home that you've sold recently? My favorite home that I sold was Lanikai Oceanside. It once belonged to the Hawaiian Princess Kawananakoa. Everyone referred to the house as a teardown but I was determined that it was a diamond in the rough. Sure enough, I was able to convey this message to my buyers and they have kept the original home and done a magnificent job of restoring and bringing back its original regal splendor. My clients recently had my family and me over for dinner and we were in absolute AWE. I couldn't be happier for my clients and everyone in our neighborhood who has seen this home appreciates the love and respect that was put into it. This home is now a Lanikai vacation rental- take a peek inside!
If someone is thinking about moving or buying property on Oahu, what is your best advice? The best advice that I would give them is to educate themselves on the unique aspects that all our island has to offer and then match their lifestyles to the perfect location; whether it be close to jobs, schools, nightlife, surf, beach towns, retirement or investment...the perfect spot is here on Oahu.
What's your favorite beach on Oahu and why? By far my favorite beach on Oahu is Lanikai. I am so fortunate that I get to walk my dog and swim at this beach every morning. I love paddle boarding out to the Mokulua Islands, surfing on the reef, surfing flat island, or swimming amongst all the beautiful tropical fish. Its waters are majestic.
If I wasn’t selling real estate I’d be... studying the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda or joining the Peace Corp...but I'll have to save that for when my kids are all done with University ;)
