How to help victims of Big Island lava flow

Posted Friday, May 11, 2018 by Brittany Anderson

The Kilauea volcano eruption in the Leilani Estates area of the Big Island of Hawaii has destroyed some 35 structures, including at least 26 homes, and displaced approximately 1,700 residents. May 3, 2018 fissures opened in the Leilani Estates neighborhood and soon began spewing lava along with hazardous sulfur dioxide. The lava now covers 117 acres flowing from 15 fissures and the residents of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens have been evacuated from their homes. With eruptions expected to continue, we’ve compiled a list of how you can help lower Puna evacuees.
